Hernando, Mississippi

Hernando, MS

French colonizers settled on land previously owned by the Chickasaw people, and they had extensive trading networks with tribes along the river. The local natives signed a treaty that ceded most of their lands after the Indian Removal Act of 1830, opening the region up for European settlers to move in. The area then known as Jefferson was renamed Hernando in 1832 after Spanish Conquistador Hernando de Soto, the first European to discover the Mississippi River.

Today it is a quiet, medium-sized city of just under 25.5 square miles and approximately 14,000 people. It has experienced a whopping doubling of residents in the last 20 years. According to Niche.com, Hernando is the best place to buy a house in the region around the Memphis area, and many folks who live in there commute to Memphis for both business and pleasure. This city that prides itself on being a great place to raise a family, something that has attracted many younger residents. The local school system is home to several A-ranked institutions and overall, the schools are ranked 2nd in the state.

Although it is very close to Memphis, that doesn’t mean the larger city is relied on for entertainment. Just a short drive away is the Mid-South Fair, an annual event that has been dedicated to providing visitors with family-oriented fun since its first incarnation in 1856. The event is meant to allow residents of the Mid-South to show off skills in their chosen field, with scholarships being granted, art contests, the Miss Mid-South Fair Pageant, and several highly competitive youth talent contests. There are also more than 50 rides to enjoy and plenty of ground acts performing in scattered locations across the fairground. Don’t forget to stop at one of the many food stands hawking such All-American delicacies as candied apples, turkey legs, funnel cakes, corn dogs, and more.

It has rave reviews that heavily praise the walk-in brain-teasers’ complexity, the customer service, and the overall amount of fun that was had during visits.
